Abstract

This study focused on adult learners’ age, race, gender, and whether they graduated from a distant-learning, master in the art of teaching program at an accredited college during the three academic semesters that comprised the 2007-2008 school year. The dependent variable used in this study consisted of whether adult learners graduated from a distant-learning, master in the art of teaching program. The independent variables of age, race and gender were analyzed to determine if and to what extent associations exist between the independent variables and the dependent variable, whether they graduated from a DL-MAT program at an accredited college. Data were collected from the database records of a diverse, urban, accredited college. The independent variables of age, race and gender were then combined to determine if there is an association between the combined independent variables and the dependent variable of whether the adult learners graduated from a DL-MAT program. As a general data analysis approach, point-biserial (rpb), chi-square and discriminant function analysis (DFA) were used to determine if an association exists between age, race, and gender and whether the adult learners graduated. Cramer’s V was used to determine the strength and significance of the associations. The results of this study pointed to statistically significant associations with respect to the dependent variables of age and race and the independent variable of whether the adult learner graduated. The results of this study also pointed to statistically significant associations with respect to the combined dependent variables of age, race, and gender and the independent variable of whether the adult learner graduated. However, the results of this study did not show a statistically significant association with respect to the dependent variables gender and the independent variable of whether the adult learner graduated.
