Zines as a pedagogy of hope for adolescent girls

This study looked at the implications of adolescent girls working with zines, and how this activity may constitute a pedagogy of hope and possibility in the face of barriers and limitations. Six adolescent girls participated in group discussion, a zine making workshop, and a focus group over a period of six weeks. The results focused on the contributions of two participants, Miffy and Keke, which were analyzed in depth. They recognize limitations in their lives as adolescent girls, such as the devaluation of feminine characteristics, having to portray an inauthentic self, a narrow standard of beauty, stereotypes, and a focus on consumption and cynicism. The implications of their work with zines include a need for self-expression and privacy, relating and connecting to others through zine making, and a sense of hopefulness embodied in their zines.
