Instructor perception of student education: Traditional vs. online learning methods

Distance education growth is facilitated by technological advances and consumer demand. Despite the popularity of distance education, instructors may be reluctant to embrace online learning due to negative stereotypes and limited technological skills. According to the Hypotheses, instructors: will prefer traditional education; will rate traditional students as having higher potential for academic success; with less online experience will prefer traditional education whereas those with more experience will have no preference. Instructor preference for traditional versus online learning methods was measured by surveying 70 participants. Results indicated instructors selected the online student more often; however, the traditional student received higher ratings regarding candidacy potential and exhibition of academic success criteria. Bias based on education delivery method may have implications for online education programs and graduate school acceptance, as well as employer new hire selection practices.
