Abstract

This study, drawing on phenomenology and qualitative methods, investigated the manner in which students understood their distance learning experiences. Ten graduate and undergraduate students from a large state university were interviewed about their views of distance learning. Each interview was transcribed, coded, and thematized in relationship to three general categories: effectiveness, satisfaction, and communication. Overall, students believed they were learning equally as well as in a traditional educational environment. The students also indicated that the positive experiences involved in distance learning were sufficient to overcome perceived negative experiences. The role of communication was interwoven with learning and satisfaction and was discussed in relation to community, competition, and the role of the senses in distance learning. Students reiterated the importance of having a distance learning option and offered several suggestions to enhance the distance learning experience.
