Abstract
Cultivating critical thinking is the most desired goal in higher education. This study investigates students' cognitive skills during collaborative learning in a graduate-level online course. Content analysis technique involving both numeric and interpretive data analysis is utilized to analyze content and cognitive skills that take place in online discussion boards. Findings indicate that the emergence of student cognitive skill level in small group online discussions is associated with the type of cognitive tasks, the purpose of the group online activity and the deadline of each activity.
