Student Acceptance of Web-Based Learning: A Quantitative Analysis within a Public University in Thailand

, Walden University, United States

Walden University . Awarded

Online learning provides learners with more convenient and flexible ways of learning than does a traditional learning environment. Many Thai universities have implemented online learning for their students despite a lack of knowledge and understanding about students’ attitudes toward and behavioral intention to using the system. The purpose of this study was to investigate the attitudes and behavioral intentions of the students in a public university in a rural area of Thailand with regard to their acceptance of web-based learning. The theoretical framework was based on the concept of user acceptance of technology in the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) model. The research questions focused on exploring students’ year level and gender differences in regards to behavioral intentions and attitudes toward web-based learning, as well as determining whether there are relationships between students’ behavioral intentions and additional variables thought to influence their intentions towards making use of this technology. The survey instrument, adapted from the UTAUT study and Kolb’s learning style inventory, was used as a means of data collection from 305 information technology students. A combination of t tests, analysis of variances, multiple linear regression, and Spearman rho correlation coefficient was used to analyze the data. The results illustrate that most students do not quite accept web-based learning system even though the study reported that they possess skills and experience with computer usage and have no difficulties with internet connection. This study contributes to enabling positive social changes in that it provides information for use and reference in developing online learning that suits learning styles of Thai students. The knowledge will make grounds for expansive use in educational institutions and organizations nationwide.
