Computer literacy in the digital age: Development of the Computer Literacy Measure for Prospective Employees (CLMPE)

The major focus of this study was to develop a measure of computer literacy, which can be used to aid small businesses in identifying, selecting, and placing prospective employees into their firms. The study was composed of three phases (1) test preparation, (2) pilot study, and (3) edited test administration. Once developed, the Computer Literacy Measure For Prospective Employees (CLMPE) was administered to a convenient sample of 395 undergraduates, graduates, and non-students from various departments at Stephen F. Austin State University. A factor analysis was conducted to examine the commonalties among the resulting scores. The analysis indicated the presence of three factors: Hardware/Software, Programming/Networks/Multimedia, and the Internet. An independent t-test was also conducted to determine if the CLMPE would produce test scores, which discriminated between members of high and low computer experience groups. Results indicated that individuals in the high computer experience group scored significantly higher on the CLMPE compared to those in the low experience group. Results from a post hoc t-test suggest that the three-factor structure produced by the CLMPE does not represent factors, which are on the same level of difficulty; in contrast the Hardware/Software and Internet factors are of a lower level and the Programming/Networks/Multimedia factor is of a higher level.
