This study developed and implemented new ways of technological accessibility for LEP (Limited English Proficiency) students.
Numerous aspects of education are in a state of transition through the introduction of new technologies. The currently in vogue process among educators is clearly to conceptualize and restructure our educational systems.
The primary goals of the study were to develop new ways of technological accessibility and through the use of computerized technology the LEP (Limited English Proficiency) students were able to acquire the learning of the English language at a much accelerated pace that the use with just conventional ESOL models. Although this project was used with middle school students, it could be applied in any situation and extended to be implemented by the rest of the schools in the state of Florida, as well as to other communities where there are students demonstrating difficulties in the acquisition of the English language.
The research approach model was designed to be a hands on format. Data gathering via the computer was based on observation and documentation. Research was also conducted using the Internet. The students were evaluated periodically in order to judge this proficiency at each stage of the research process.
At the completion of this study, ten percent (10%) improvements in the grades of those students who participated in the computer assisted program showed that they successfully achieved proficiency. This became possible due to the availability of using the computer enhanced project that taught them the fundamentals of Computer/Technology awareness.
Changes and suggestion for modifications can be taken into consideration to enhance the program development.
