The use of technology in the teaching and learning process has grown in the last decade. The rise of powerful high-level computation and visualization packages has facilitated this process. The approach of “understanding through seeing” is an important factor.

Engineering courses are mathematically intensive and the need for educational tools to facilitate the learning of specific mathematical topics is clear. Complex analysis is one of the topics that students can apply in many engineering fields.

This dissertation describes the design and development of an interactive educational tool for teaching complex analysis for engineering students. It focuses on those topics where visualization plays special role. The project was grounded in the demonstration methodology with the intention of providing a practical computer tool that creates a more stimulating lecture. The MATLAB programming environment was used because of its graphic capability and its acceptance among academic users.

The result is a demonstration software program that uses the power of graphics to illustrate the concepts in a complex analysis course, and that can be used in-class for small or large groups or by individuals.
