Factors associated with usage of Internet-based computer-mediated communication (CMC) technologies among university faculty

This study examined the association of university faculty's usage of the Internet and the Internet-based Computer-Mediated Communication (CMC) technologies with certain selected factors. The factors that were investigated in this study were categorized as follows: (1) intrinsic motivation factors—perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness & competitive pressure, (2) extrinsic motivation factors—organizational support & administrative pressure. Mail surveys were distributed to a random sample of faculty members at a mid-sized southeastern university. Collected data from these surveys was used to first examine relationships. Significant positive correlations were found between the faculty's usage of Internet technologies and the intrinsic motivation factors. An analysis of variance showed significance between the faculty's overall usage and the intrinsic motivation factors. Overall, the results suggest that the technology usage by the faculty was more associated with factors that were intrinsically motivated than with factors that were extrinsically motivated.
