Social media and social networking have transformed communication, education, and workforce development. Social media has grown to be a great resource to connect with friends and professionals alike. However, is there something in our virtual presence that one would not want a current or future employer to see?
Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+ allow a vast audience to get a glimpse of an individual’s life. The purpose of this study was to investigate university students' approach towards using social media and what impact a social media presence can have on future employment. Data was gathered through two focus groups which consist of graduate students of a public university in the Midwest, and potential employers of the same region. The results indicated that companies differ in their use of social media for recruitment purposes and that students more commonly separate their professional from their personal online presence.
