The Development of an Electronic Performance Support System for Teachers

There have been several attempts at developing computer tools for teachers. Computer application developers have a tendency to develop the tool first, then try to fit the tool into the teachers' work environment. In reviewing the literature relating to electronic performance support systems, user-cen-tered and performance-centered design, we found that the recommended approach was to precede the development with a detailed task analysis of the job that the computer sys-tem is to support. Toward that end, this project documents the tasks performed by teachers throughout the day. From the benchmark data, a set of computer tools was suggested to help teachers more efficiently carry out their task. Hence, a prototype was built based on these suggestions. Enhance-ments to the computer tools were based on the comments ob-tained from teachers that evaluated the tool. While this report is on the task analysis of eight teachers at one local middle school, we expect to expand this project to other schools later.
