Abstract

New technologies used in educational contexts must require specific functionalities to enable flexible environments for online collaboration. This requirement is becoming increasingly important for academic settings where courses are integrating more and more hybrid, distance and other models of university teaching. The importance of the features of the technology is the flagship idea of this study. As methodological approach, twenty-four officials and academic experts were interviewed in fifteen universities in Canada. The results show that the reasons why universities choose to integrate new technologies in education are not always guided by educational motivations, and this explains that the technology chosen is not necessarily an instructional and a learning technology. On this basis, appropriate technologies for real educational and institutional evolution of conventional universities have been identified by the interviewees. As it turned out, a good tool is one that completes the task best in as easily and efficiently as possible.
