Abstract

This paper addresses emerging concerns regarding popular learning management systems. In particular, the systems design encourages a teacher-centered approach that is not consisten with a more broadly defined user-centered approach. This paper presents an example of a bottom up approach to the design of a learning environment for web-based courses. The tool used in this case is DokuWiki, an open-source content management system. The paper describes how the flexibility of this type of system is conducive to the development of an interface that is intuitive, practical and consistent with how teachers and learners interact.
