Facilitators’ and Students’ Conceptions of Teaching and Learning in Simulation-Based Learning Environment

Conceptions of teaching and learning affect the approaches to teaching and learning, as well as learning outcomes, and therefore need to be made explicit. Here the research question is as follows: How do facilitators and students view teaching and learning in a simulation-based learning environment (SBLE)? During the study, the interviews, students’ learning diaries and open answers of the pre- and post-questionnaires of 14 paramedic students and 4 facilitators were analysed using the content analysis method. Results revealed that teaching was viewed as communicating the knowledge and skills, whereas in SBLE the teaching was seen as instructing, especially from the facilitators’ viewpoint. Learning was viewed as understanding, internalizing and applying, as well as individually different processes. In addition, students presented several things that would promote and prevent learning. After the training, they should be more independent, experienced and prepared, though it was acknowledged that the learning was a life-long process.
