Abstract

This paper will discuss some of the issues and challenges that arise when doing internet-mediated intercultural exchanges. The author will discuss his experiences organizing online intercultural exchanges with Japanese students and students in the USA, Hungary, Turkey and Taiwan. The exchanges took place during 2008 and 2009 and utilized various interfaces, including email, videomail and Facebook. Feedback from students in the exchanges indicated that although they were impressed with the potential of online interaction to aid language learning and increase cultural awareness, they were aware of the time spent solving logistical problems and took this into consideration when evaluating the usefulness of the online interfaces used. Suggestions for organizing online intercultural exchanges will be provided so that benefits to students are optimized.
