Abstract

One of the main reasons simulation is a valuable training tool is its ability to create realistic scenarios for situations where training in the corresponding real scenario is expensive, undesirable, or impossible. This is especially true in medical simulation and healthcare professional training. The realism of the simulation can be the key to its training effectiveness if one of the goals is to prepare the trainee for situations that may be stressful, emotionally unsettling, or that affect human life. The Virtual Nurse (VNurse) training environment is a modular dynamic PC-based simulation framework for nurse training in a semi-virtual environment. VNurse addresses current issues regarding nurse preparation and is expected to train and evaluate nurse performance using curriculum-based module instruction. In this paper, we present the architecture and user interface design for VNurse. The framework will be comprised of individual training units, which can be used independently if necessary.
