Abstract

An e-learning model was implemented at a diverse campus to create a flexible and convenient learning environment for the students. The model consisted of a website and a collection of multimedia learning modules. The website played a central role in providing direction and cohesiveness to the learning process. This paper discusses the evolution of the website from a simple site hosted on a shared web server to a collaborative learning site that is currently being hosted using Google Apps. The paper highlights the use of Software as a Service (SaaS) concept in a cloud computing environment to facilitate the rapid development and maintenance of the site. In particular, it illustrates the Web 2.0 features found in Google sites and Google Docs to achieve the said results. The conclusion reached was that the features found in a SaaS application such as Google Apps offer unprecedented opportunities to easily implement interactive and collaborative learning that has no parallels in the past.
