Abstract

It is essential to think about the learner and analyze the process of learning before developing learning resources. For a multimedia based learning tool, it is crucial to visualize the process of cognition along with conducting need analysis, task analysis and content analysis. In developing digital tools for learning foreign languages it is important to find out about learner’s characteristics (prior experiences, background education, motivation, etc). This paper discusses the design process of a Japanese Kanji character learning tool and its implementation. Tablet PCs were used to conduct the effectiveness study. Student’s writing was recorded before and after using the Kanji character learning tool. Video recording of the sequence of writing and pauses revealed vital information about learners and also the process of learning and cognition.
