Abstract

Research is increasingly demonstrating the limitations of traditional advanced studies programs for gifted learners. In particular, issues of equity, accessibility and the instructional design of existing curricula need to be addressed for underserved and economically disadvantaged gifted learners. This brief paper will present a collaborative initiative between the University of Richmond's Math and Science Investigator program and the University of Virginia's Project Logged On and their joint goal of providing an advanced-level environmental science curriculum to gifted learners using the open-source learning management system, Moodle. It is intended that the outcome of this synergy will encourage students to pursue, and ultimately pass, the relevant Advanced Placement science examination, as well as inform best practices of online teaching and learning with underserved gifted learners.
