Computer Assisted Debate: A Union of Digital Literacy and Urban Debate

This paper describes a pilot ethnography focused on middle school students in the Computer Assisted Debate (CAD) program community within Atlanta Public Schools. The research questions investigated (1) student beliefs and attitudes toward Internet research, and (2) any impact CAD has on student digital and information literacy. Prior research reports show that middle school students have weak evaluation skills concerning what they find online. While CAD students are successful in debate—are they any better than their peers at wading through the endless streams of Internet information and making wise and thoughtful conclusions about what they find? Results and suggestions derived from researcher observations and interviews are presented and discussed.
