Abstract

We developed dialogue-videos for learning based on socioscientific issues (SSI) in elementary schools, introduced them into elementary schools and evaluated their effectiveness in supporting learning. This study was guided by two research questions: (1) Do our dialogue-videos offer four benefits of dialogue-videos in SSI-based learning (namely, that tutees serve as learning models for observers, that observers can learn through tutor-tutee interaction, that observers think more deeply about the learning content, and that learners are promoted to communicate with others) for elementary school students? (2) Do our dialogue-videos support elementary school students in understanding the opinions of various stakeholders involved in SSI? We conducted two evaluation tasks corresponding to the research questions. Our results showed that our dialogue-videos offered the four benefits of dialogue-videos in SSI-based learning for elementary school students, and that they support elementary school students to understand the opinions of various stakeholders involved in SSI.
