Abstract

21st-century students rely on media and technology to facilitate learning. Cheng, Kozol and Taveras (2015) indicated that “8 to 18-year-olds spend more time with media than in any other activity besides (maybe) sleeping—an average of more than 7½ hours a day, seven days a week.”(p. 204). The integration of media is critical to increasing student engagement in mathematical learning. This exploratory study sought to discern if pre-service secondary mathematics teachers (PSMTs) would be disposed to building their pedagogic intention using edutainment, such as a television series Numb3rs in their future teaching. Seven PSMTs viewed three randomly selected episodes, completed associated assignments, and completed online surveys evaluating the study endeavors. Results indicated PSMTs were engaged with the episodes and the assignments, and would likely be predisposed to a pedagogic intention to integrate edutainment in their future classroom teaching practices.
