Abstract
This case study explores and compares different instructional strategies to design and implement interactive synchronous e-learning. The instructional strategies focus on modes of interactions, discussion formats, and learning resources. The participants of this study consisted of undergraduate and graduate students in a teacher education program. The transcripts of online interactions from four undergraduate and graduate courses using a synchronous e-learning environment were analyzed in this study. The study reports the positive and negative effects of synchronous interactions and discusses practical guidelines to foster successful learning experience in synchronous online environments. The article particularly focuses on instructional tactics for collaboration-based synchronous e-learning to support the 5Cs (critical thinking, creative problem solving, communication, collaboration and cross-cultural relationship building) skills necessary in the 21st century.
